Colour pop: How-to for beginners, intermediates & advanced fashionistas

Whether you like it or not, colour is coming. This spring/summer, you can expect a technicolour tidal wave gushing through your wardrobes and favourite stores, forcing you to ditch the black for a while, and be more open to brights (Melbourne, I’m looking at you). Judging by my recent trip to the UK, it’s already washed through London, leaving behind a trail of fuchsias and cobalts, and now it’s screaming towards Australia quicker than you can say “colour blocking”… Have you got a surfboard?

Start experimenting with the vast range of hues in stores at the moment, depending on your comfort level with colour.

Colour for BEGINNERS

THE RULES
1. Not a colour person? Add it with an accessory instead, like a belt, shoe or bag.
2. If you’re feeling brave, go with two colours like I’ve done here, but stick to that to avoid overkill.
3. Betts and Novo are introducing fabulous ranges of coloured kicks, so these will be the go-to stores for beginners.

Sportsgirl top $89.95, Dotti shorts $49.95, Glassons belt $24.95, Betts ‘Silhouette’ heels $99.99. Diva earrings $14.99, Diva ring $14.99

Colour for INTERMEDIATES

THE RULES
1. Take it up a notch with one standout piece of clothing, like a blazer, over something neutral.
2. Bonus cred for wearing over a pattern, like floral. Make it easy by picking out a key colour and matching your blazer/pants to it.
3. Coloured blazers and tops are great for fuller figures who want to experiment with fashion, but in a way that suits their shape.

Bardot dress $99.95, Bardot blazer $129.95, Diva necklace $19.99, Betts ‘Miranda’ heels $99.99

Colour for ADVANCED

THE RULES
1. Wear a minimum of 2 colours together to get this look. Jewel tones (sapphire blue, emerald green etc) are always in fashion and suit most skin types, but if you’re olive or tan, experiment with neons like chartreuse and acid yellow.
2. Use the lighter colours on your best assets, and darker colours to draw attention away from areas you’d rather disguise.
3. Keep your accessories quite simple – your outfit is busy enough.

Sportsgirl top $89.95, Sportsgirl skirt $89.95, Supre belts (2 worn) $10, Diva ring $16.99, Betts ‘Amazing’ wedges $119.99

I’m wearing Bardot blazer $129.95, Glue shorts $69.95, Sportsgirl ‘Recycle It’ tee $50, Sportsgirl leather boots $159.95.

LOVE this post! I recently did a post on colour blocking on my blog audreyeffect.tumblr.com love your tips, really helpful :)

skinny people – not realistic. thanks a bunch

‘skinny people – not realistic. thanks a bunch’ What the? How are skinny people not realistic? Just because of the growing number of fat lazy people in Australia (now making us the fattest nation in the world) does not mean that we should now be advertising for those fat lazy people so that they feel better about being unhealthy. This model looks like a very healthy size 8, she looks like she’s having a lot of fun – so who do you think you are to be bringing her down just because you’re overweight and miserable.
Great post Alyce! Love the Betts heels! x K

Hi Sharia, although the model is a size 8, all of these tips can be carried off by a woman of any size! We can all wear coloured accessories and clothing, that’s what so great about this trend – unlike bandage dresses for example, you can tailor it to make it work for you. I think the best option for voluptuous women is the intermediate, as I’ve suggested in my tips X

HI Alyce,
thank you for the great tips!! I am the type of person that usually wears pink and white together because my favourite colour is pink. But when I am wearing black, I usually add like a scarf and, just to make it stand out…..the scarf is usually pink!!!!
